Guest Review Of "Not A Fan" By Kyle Idleman

This is the first ever guest review in The Christian Music Junkie blog history, and it is by none other than Mrs. Niki Osterman! I hope you enjoy the review, and please leave your feedback on the review and the book!

-This book challenged me to what it means to be called a Christian. In a very thought provoking way, Kyle Idleman leads you through the differences between being a fan of Christ or being a follower of Christ. Fans know all the stats of Jesus, they can even quote famous words of Jesus. Kyle compares being a fan of Christ, like being a fan of a celebrity. You can know everything about them, but you don't really have a relationship with the person.

I was struck by the direct approach Kyle takes, he uses perspectives that we can all associate with today. He refers to the relationship that Christ wants with us, the way we would look at marriage. In marriage we want our spouse to put us first, and we ask that we are each other one and only love. Kyles approach made things stand out to me in a very clear way. I believe that this book would be a great read for anyone , especially those who are called Christians.

This is the first Christian book that I have read all the way through, that didn't lose my interest part way through. While reading this book I was convicted that I have been living more as a fan than a follower. You can't read this book and stay the same. You will be changed. I know I was. - Niki Osterman

Independent Artist Of The Week: 3 In The Same

For this weeks Independent Artist Of The Week, I have selected "3 In The Same"! I recently discovered them and I enjoyed the music and vocals a lot! So with out further delay welcome "3 In The Same" *the crowd goes wild*.

"3 In The Same are Soldiers for Christ and their sole purpose is to serve the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Their motivation is not influenced by their own personal gain, but rather to see Christ glorified and to spread His good news through out the United States and abroad.

The band was formed in late 2003. Individually, each member brings in a minimum of 14 years of experience in music. The members of the band also gained experience as a group by leading worship in their local church.

With God in the center, doors opened for 3 In The Same and they had numerous opportunities to present the gospel in their local community as well as internationally.

3 In The Same shows continuous growth through recording and writing of original material; along with this original material, the group is also working on a large selection of praise and worship music to expand their field of ministry.

Collectively, the hopes and prayers of the band is that the music the Lord has put on their hearts will provide encouragement through life’s trials as well as an avenue to hear a positive and uplifting message.

For King & Country - Crave Review

There is this really cool Christian music festival in Wisconsin called Lifest. I have been there once before, and I have the the privilege to go again this year! I am excited to see some of the bands I love, and I am also excited to discover new bands! So as part of my research before the festival, I am going to be review a few CDs, and maybe even DVDs and books by artists that are going to be at the festival. So to kick things off is my review of "Crave" by For King & Country.

The album starts off with the song "Light It Up". This song starts off a little slower but it builds up to a fun and encouraging chorus. I really enjoyed how catchy this song is and has a great sound. One of my favorite songs is next, it is called "Proof Of Your Love". I absolutely love the vocals on this song! Throughout the entire album the vocals are great, but I especially love them on this song. This song is on repeat on my iPod! The next song on the album is "Missing". Haha reading back through that it sounds kinda funny "The next song is missing". Anyway moving on...at first hearing the beginning of this song I thought it was okay.....but not that great. Then the song grew on me as it progressed, and I actually love it now!

I heard the next song "Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)" in concert and not knowing the song I loved it from the beginning. Now whenever I hear the song it brings back concert memories! Which if you get a chance to see For King & Country in concert you should take it because they are really good in concert. The next song on the album is "People Change". This song is a little slower and as the name suggests this song talks about how people change and can become better. Bringing more energy is the next song "Middle Of Your Heart". This song is upbeat and enjoyable to listen to. The lyrics talk about giving God control of your heart and not having to worry.

Slowing down a bit is the next song "Love's To Blame". This song has a beautiful sound with the vocals and piano. It is actually a nice change to go from a fun song to one more mellow with piano....it was a wise choice. The next song "Fine Fine Life" is a fun song, with its catchy chorus and pleasant sound. I actually really love this song, it happens to be my favorite on the album. This song just makes you happy and reminds you that it is indeed a fine fine life.

Coming up next in the song "Sane". This song is a bit more mellow than the previous song, but I still has quite a bit of energy. To me this song isn't a stand out track, but still an enjoyable listen. I love the name of the next song "Pushing On A Pull Door". The lyrics of this song are really really good as well. They talk about how only when everything falls apart will you find what you need. I love a song with great analogies and that is why I love this song. Finishing out the album is the title track "Crave". Although it is a little odd to end with the title track, this song ends the album in a nice and mellow way.

I have heard a lot of good things about this album and so I had high expectations coming into it. The music and vocals didn't disappoint with a consistently great sound and even better vocals. however the lyrics did disappoint slightly, I was just hoping for more song with a deep meaning but all in all the album was good and I would give the album 4 stars.

Independent Artist Of The Week Is Back With 9th Hour

I have been having a lot of computer problems lately, so I haven't been posting as much as I would like to and I apologize. I also haven't been doing well keeping up with the Independent Artist Of The Week, but that is about I change! Independent Artist Of The Week is back! Allan Scott Band - Blameless And Free Review

A newly discovered favorite EP of mine in called "Blameless And Free" by Allan Scott Band. My review of the EP is below, and I think you should check it out! Also sorry there isn't a picture, for some reason I can't upload one. :/

The EP starts off with the song "Great Things". This song is an upbeat worship song, with really great vocals. I love finding a This song will be on repeat on my iPod for awhile! I would say my favorite song on the EP would be "Perfect Love" and that is good considering it is on here twice, the regular version and the acoustic version. To pick which version is my favorite would be difficult because I love both, but I do really love the beat of the regular (Christ alive) version, so I guess I would go with that.

The other song on the EP is "Shine". This song is another fun worship song that I would love to hear people sing in church. The chorus is easy to sing along with and the lyrics are great. The chorus says "Open our eyes Lord to see your glory / Reveal your grace Lord your love and mercy / Shine you shine / Open our eyes Lord to see your promise / Reveal your Lord Rain down upon us".

I love EP's, they are a great way to get a taste of the music and if it is a good EP it makes you want to hear more. A little advice for a band is leave the audience wanting a little more because you don't want them to get tired of the album. The Allan Scott Band nailed this EP, because they left me wanting more, but yet I still felt like it was worth it for them to make the EP. I would definitely recommend checking out this band, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I would give this EP 4.5/5.

Mikeschair - A Beautiful Life Album Review

Mikeschair released their newest album "A Beautiful Life" last August, but I am just getting around to reviewing it. I am not sure why it took so long though, this album is great!

The Album starts with the self-titled song "A Beautiful Life". Starting off slow this song grows into a beautiful song, with a catchy chorus and a message that is encouraging. I really enjoyed  the next song "Love Won't Quit On Us". With another hopeful message, this song also has an upbeat and fun sound, which was nice to listen to. This song will probably be on repeat on my iPod for awhile. The next song on the album is "Save Me Now". As the title suggests this song is about crying out to God asking him to save us.

The next song "Someone Worth Dying For" is one of Mikeschair's most popular songs, and I can see why. The message of this song is incredible and powerful. The chorus of the song says "Am I more than flesh and bone / Am I really something beautiful / I want to believe, I want to believe / That I'm not just some wandering soul / That you don't see and you don't know / I want to believe, Jesus help me believe / That I'm someone worth dying for". With more of an upbeat sound comes the next song "You Loved Me First". Musically this song sounds quite similar to the song "Love Won't Quit On Us". Lyrically this song is a good reminder about how much God loves us, it is something we should remind ourselves of often.

Coming up next is the rock influenced song "The More". Compared to most of the other songs on the album this one rocks out! This song has a lot of energy, and I think it would be a lot of fun in concert! :) The next song on the album is "All For You". This song is another one of Mikeschair's more popular singles, that you would hear on the radio. I really like this song, when ever I hear it on the radio I get excited. "Ignite" is the next song and it also more of a high energy rock sound. I just love the sound of this song, it has a fun beat and also some great guitars.

Starting with a cool techno sound is the next song "Pieces". This song continues with the infectious energy, and a sound somewhat similar to the two previous songs. The next song "Come Alive" slows things down a bit for more of a worship feel. The drums are especially good in this song. Then finishing off the album is the song "Gonna See Your Kingdom". This song has a middle of the road sound, it isn't a high energy rock song, but it isn't a slow worship song either. The end of this song is my favorite though with the clapping and "ohs".

This album was really good, their were a couple parts that were just okay, but for the most part it was all really good. The entire album is very encouraging and hopeful, and the vocals are amazing. I would give this album 4 stars

Thousand Foot Krutch And P.O.D. On Rockstar Energy's Uproar Tour

Thousand Foot Krutch and P.O.D. announced a couple days ago that they are going to be a part of the Uproar Tour which is put on by Rockstar Energy Drinks!

They will be playing along side some big mainstream bands including: Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind & Papa Roach. This tour will be hitting the streets this August and September. For more info on tour dates check out the tour website.

This is a great opportunity for both bands to reach out to a lot of people who wouldn't normally listen to "Christian" music. They may even be able to connect with the other bands and the tour, and share their faith with them as well!

Kyle Leaving Anthem Lights?

Today as I got on Twitter I was informed of some sad news.....Anthem Lights posted on their Facebook and Twitter pages that Kyle Kupecky feels like God is calling him in another direction, so he is going to be leaving the band. What Anthem Lights posted on Facebook is below.

"It has been a blessing to have Kyle as a part of this ministry. However, he feels God calling him to other things. We love him and wish him God's best.
-Alan, Caleb, and Chad"

I do not know if Anthem Lights will now only have 3 singers, or if they will be adding a new member to the band. I will keep you guys updated on any new developments or changes.

Anthem Lights just posted this on twitter: "Thank you all for your encouragement! Excited to introduce you to the newest member of Anthem Lights later this week! Stay tuned! -the guys".

I am excited and curious of who it could be! I will continue to update! :)

Ilia - We Were Shipwrecks EP Review

It was suggested to me by a reader that I should review something by Ilia, so here it is! Below is the review for their EP "We Were Shipwrecks".

The EP starts off with the rock song "Ezekiel". This song introduces listeners to more of a hard rock sound that they will hear throughout the entire album. You also get just a taste of the great female vocals on this EP. The next song is the self titled track "We Were Shipwrecks". This has some sweet guitars and strong vocals, but the drums are my favorite part! I just love the beat in this song! Along with a great sound this song also has really good lyrics. My favorite line of the song is "We were shipwrecks drowning by the tide, But a voice revived us saving our lives".

The next song on the EP is "Reaching". This song is probably my favorite song on the album, mainly because of the message and the chorus! I really enjoyed listening to the entire song, a kind of song you can listen to again and again. I appreciated how the lyrics seemed very honest and raw. Once again I really enjoyed the beat of the next song "Fall On Us". This song wasn't my favorite on the EP, although it definitely wasn't bad, it just seemed to be quite repetitive. Finishing out the EP is the song "We Will Rise". This song is a little slower and although I normally like the more upbeat songs, I really, really enjoyed it. There are also two bonus acoustic versions of the songs "Reaching" and "We Were Shipwrecks" on the EP. I actually really enjoyed the acoustic versions of the songs, maybe even better than the original version! It was a nice bonus to the EP!

I was a little surprised by this EP. Looking at the cover I thought it was going to be reviewing a very hard rock album or even a metal sounding EP. However once again I learned not to judge a book by it's cover or in this case an album by its cover. Although this EP did have quite a few hard rock elements, that wasn't all there was to offer. "We Were Shipwrecks" also had a softer side that is equally impressive as the rock side. This EP was very good it isn't perfect, but it is still a great one to pick up and listen to. I would give this EP 4 stars but keep an eye on Ilia because there is a lot of potential there!

Anthem Lights - Anthem Lights Album Review

Anthem Lights released their self titled album "Anthem Lights" on May 10th of last year! I am quite late reviewing it, but you know what they say "Better Late Than Never".

The album starts off with the popular Anthem Lights song "Can't Shut Up". This song introduces listeners to the four voices that make up Anthem Lights, and although each of the guys sounds good by themselves, they sound the best when they sing with each other. "Can't Shut Up" has infectious energy and a great beat, which makes it a hit in concert! The next song "I Wanna Know You Like That" is one of my favorite songs on the album, mainly because of the lyrics. The chorus of the song which is about crying out to God, says "I wanna know You like / To live to love / With everything I am, To give it all / I wanna know You like that / To become, a man after Your heart / and not look back / I wanna know You like that".

Starting off a little slower is the next song "Circles". This song has a nice sound with all the vocals fitting together perfectly and or course a nice beat. The message of the song is best summed up at the beginning of the chorus when it says "Before I even know it, I'm right back at the start / Doing what I what and breaking my own heart". Staying with more of a mellow worship sound is the next song "I Can't Get Over You". This song song has a great sound, and is an amazing worship song. When Anthem Lights plays this song in a concert, it is truly amazing all the fans who were just jumping up and down to "Can't Shut Up" will all be standing there with their hands raised praising God.

The next song on the album is "Stranger". This song more upbeat and fun than the two previous songs but it is still a very powerful worship song. This song talks about how as Christians we are called to be strangers to this world. The next song "Outta My Mind" is tied for my favorite song on the album. This song is upbeat and fun with a chorus that is easy to sing along with, which makes this song a blast in concert! Once again the message is also very good, challenging listeners to draw closer to God. "Lifeline" is the next song on the album. With a catchy pop / rock sound this song is another fun song in concert! The lyrics talk about how God is our lifeline when realize that we can't save ourselves. Starting off more calm with just piano is the next song "Lighthouse". This song slowly builds up to the chorus which is calling listeners to be the light of the world, by saying "It's up to you, It's up to me / To be the lighthouse / They should know they're not alone".

The next song "Freedom Into Slavery" is the other song tied for my favorite song on the album. Starting off with some cool whistling that is somehow catchy...I have caught myself whistling it quite a few times!  This song also has great vocals and just a nice sound. However the lyrics are the best part of this song, if I could quote them all and keep the review a reasonable length I would! This song is basically saying that sometimes knowing that God will forgive what you do, enables you to sin and not feel so bad, because you know He will forgive you anyway, hence the title "Freedom Into Slavery". With the album coming to and end, is the last song on the album is "Where The Light Is". With this song being slower, it helps to make the the message even more powerful. This song is very encouraging saying that no matter how bad everything seems, there won't be any darkness where the light is. This is a hopeful, but challenging way to end the album.

With this being the bands first album as Anthem Lights, it is surprising very professional. I honestly don't know how they will get better, but I am excited to see them try! This album has a great modern sound and the lyrics are incredible! I would recommend this album to anyone who needs encouragement or anyone who likes music with a powerful message. I would give this album 4.5 stars, that way there is a little wiggle room.

Hawk Nelson Confirms New Lead Singer Plus They Are Working On New Music

Nashville, Tenn – April 26, 2012 –Hawk Nelson enters a different chapter in the band’s history as they announce their new lead singer Jon Steingard. No stranger to their fans, Steingard has been the guitarist for the past eight years. Hawk Nelson will continue with members Daniel Biro (bass), Justin Benner (drums) and Steingard (guitar, vocals).

"I am blessed to announce that Hawk Nelson will be fronted by none other than the talented Mr. Jonathan A. Steingard,” states co-founder and bassist Daniel Biro. “The chemistry we share as a band cannot be fabricated. In other words, we know we have something special here. We're very excited to be working on a bunch of new songs for everybody. It's a new day, and we want to make the most of it."

“Moving forward, I couldn't be more excited to step into the role of lead singer,” shares Steingard on his new role.

Hawk Nelson is currently working on writing new music and preparing to introduce the new line-up to their fans. The upcoming music will showcase a fresh direction combined with the signature Hawk Nelson sound their fans love.

The Rend Collective Experiment - Homemade Worship By Handmade People Review

Honestly I never thought I would like a band like The Rend Collective Experiment, because it's not the kind of music I am normally into. At least I thought I wasn't into this kind of music, that is until I seen The Rend Collective Experiment in concert. Honestly they are one of the best bands I have seen live and not because of all the lights and pyrotechnics, but because of their energy and honesty...plus their accent is pretty sweet! Below is my review for their sophomore album "Homemade Worship By Handmade People".

The album starts off with the energetic and catchy song "Praise Like Fireworks". To accurately describe this music would be hard because there are SO many different sounds and instruments, yet its not overwhelming...some how it works. With "Praise Like Fireworks" being the first song on the album, it introduces listeners to the amazing Irish vocals you will hear throughout the album. I am a huge fan of accents, so I really appreciate the singing on this entire album!

Moving on...The next song on the album is "You Are My Vision". This song is also upbeat, but yet very much a worship song with the lyrics saying "I don't want riches or man's empty praise / You're my inheritance now and always / You and only You, the first in my heart". The next song "The Cost" is probably my favorite song on the album, mostly because of the infectious beat. This song is an absolute blast in concert! It is easy to sing and clap along with and it has a lot of energy.

The next song on the album is "Second Chance". This song has a good sound, maybe not quite as much energy as the previous songs, but the lyrics are great. The chorus of "Second Chance" says " Oh Your cross it changes everything / There my world begins again with You / Oh Your cross it's where my hope restarts / A second chance is Heaven's heart". Coming next is the first song with lead Female vocals,"True Intimacy". Listening to some beautiful female vocals helps to mix up the album, which I like.

Bringing back the Irish accent and male vocals is another one of my favorite songs "Build Your Kingdom Here". Warning: This song can easily make you want to move, with its Irish jig sound, this song is packed full of energy. The next song "Desert Soul" is a little slower but doesn't lack in power. Although there aren't a bunch of lyrics in this song, the ones that are in it are very powerful. My favorite line is "I'm desperate, for a desperate heart".The next song on the album is "Christ Has Set Me Free". This song starts off simple with just an acoustic guitar, then it picks back up all the other instruments including the drums! :)

Continuing with the easy going sound is the next song "Keep Me Near". This song is a beautiful and long, worship song. The next song on the album is "Alabaster". This song is also more of a slow song, but one thing I like about The Rend Collective Experiment, is whether the song has a fast pace or a slow pace they are all very powerful. Finishing out the album is the song "Shining Star". This song has an interesting sound with all of the strings starting it off and the different instruments throughout the entire song. This a grand way to end the album!

This album is probably the most unique album I have ever reviewed....with all the different sounds and vocals, but somehow it all works into something beautiful. I would describe this album as a beautiful mess, it is not the most polished album, but it is very honest and real. I would give this album 5 stars.

Jeremy Horn - Sound Of The Broken Review

New to Ardent Records, Jeremy Horn just recently released his debut album "Sound Of The Broken" on March 6th.

The album starts with the title track "Sound Of The Broken". This song introduces listeners to the rock sound and vocals that Jeremy Horn has to offer. With the catchy lyrics and upbeat music, this is great way to start off the album. When I hear the next song "Now Is The Time" I can't help but think that this song would probably be really good live. This song seems to have a lot of energy that would be great at a concert.

The next song "Only God Who Saves" is a little slower than the previous songs, but it still has an upbeat sound....if that makes sense! The vocals on the entire album are unique and really good, but with this song especially I love the vocals. The next song on the album is "Sons And Daughters". Although pretty much all of the lyrics have a good message, the lyrics of this song in particular really shine. The chorus of the song says "You are a Father to the orphan / You are Sustainer to the poor / Lord You give good gifts to Your children / All because You are good my Lord / You are good".

I really like the next song "Surrender" it might even be my favorite song on the album. I just love the feel this song has, the vocals seem to be better on this song than on any other and the lyrics are also very good. The next song on the album is "Emptied". This song is definitely a great worship song, which talks about how we have nothing to give God except ourselves. Continuing with the powerful worship is the song "Where You Are". This song is enjoyable to listen to and not too complicated, as the chorus simply says "Take me where You are / Where You are Lord / Where You are".

Bringing back more of a rock sound is the next song "Faithful". This song is a good reminder that God is faithful and to not give up hope. The next song on the album is "Father Of Lights". This song has an upbeat and fun sound, but it is more than that, it also has an encouraging message. Finishing out the album is the song "This Reflection". The lyrics of this song are also really good, but musically I didn't care for this song as much. I am not sure why...it just isn't what I was hoping for.

For the most part "Sound Of The Broken" was all around a good album. There were some parts that were a little rough, and a few of the songs blurred together, but I still enjoyed the album. Jeremy's unique vocals were a treat to listen to and lyrically this album was encouraging. I think Jeremy is someone to keep your eyes on because I think he could go far. I would probably give this album 4 stars.
