TFK’s current single, “So Far Gone,” busted into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot AC Christian chart for the first time April 15 at No. 9 and remains a Top 10 hit today, a full 8 weeks later.

This is a very intimate song. It’s a love song, and my way of saying, ‘I can’t get enough of you,’” says TFK frontman Trevor McNevan. “It’s a worship song to me.  There’s not a day in my life when I don’t need God more and want to get closer.”

Receiving over 1,900, 5-star average customer reviews on iTunes® alone for The End Is Where We BeginTFK has found that sometimes the best way to move forward is to go back to the basics, taking all of the raw energy and emotion of the past and channeling it into the present.   For those who’ve been following the Ontario, Canada-bred players since their formation in 1997, it’s been a continuously escalating highlight reel that includes best-selling albums, top Active Rock hits (“War Of Change,” “Let The Sparks Fly,” “Fire It Up” and “Move”), tours like last summer’s Third Annual Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival, plus a slew of soundtrack slots. In fact, the group has literally infiltrated every facet of pop culture, from ongoing ESPN appearances, to various NASCAR, MLB, NHL, WWE, NCAA and NFL airings (including the 2010 Super Bowl and Tennessee Titans’ 2012-13“kickoff” song), along with the “GI Joe” movie trailer, WGN-TV’s “Smallville” and EA Sports’ NHL 2010 and 2013 video games.

Lightfall Interview

I have the pleasure of introducing you readers to a fantastic worship band called Lightfall. I was able to ask them a few questions about how they got started, and a few questions just for fun. You can learn more about the band in the interview below, and also make sure you check out their music here.

How did Lightfall get started?

Honestly, it started as a vision shared to the rest us of by our guitarist, Ryan. He felt that God was calling him to something much greater than what he was already a part of, so he was diligent to find all of us, whether it was be coincidence (by God's doing, that is), or through old friendships. And for the rest of us, we were all searching for something deeper in our walks with God, so He used Ryan in this plan that's so much bigger than we've ever dreamed. We've all experienced a taste of what true ministry is, and we all love music so it's so fitting to what we are currently pursuing.

What is the story behind the band name?

We were racking our brains for a few weeks trying so hard to think of a name for ourselves. We sifted through various possibilities, but couldn't find something that truly defined us. After one of our rehearsals. Mark, (drums) was just playing something on the guitar, as we sat and thought about it. Marquis, (bass) muttered the name "Lightfall", and it just clicked. With everything we had all been dealing with in the past year, I felt like it was God's way of saying "I'm here".  We love the fact that it's such an open-ended name, up for interpretation
.

What would you say is the main message that you are trying to convey to listeners through your music?

That Jesus is our King, and that you don't have to be in a church to meet him. We are just 5 guys trying to show God's love to people everywhere. We don't try to see ourselves as a band but as part of the congregation as well. We want people to encounter and engage with God in their own way.

How would you describe the bands sound musically, and what are some of your influences?

We are currently defining our sound through our writing process. We take much of contemporary worship, which has a lot of rock influence, and add twists and turns to it. Sometimes it's a bit heavier, sometimes it's more ethereal, other times it straight acoustic, but it's always pointing towards and glorifying God. We're really trying to incorporate technology into our sound; loops, pads, triggers. United's recent album "ZION" has been a huge inspiration to us, to see what worship music can be, and how it can be difficult to define or contain within one specific genre. Bands like the Royal Royal, Parachute, Elevation on the worship side and Imagine Dragons, M83, Daftpunk  you name it, one of us likes it.

If you had one day to do ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, what would you do?

Marquis - Eat at an all you can eat Sushi Bar...In Japan

Mark - Eat Jiro Sushi with my soon-to-be wife!

Nate - I've always wanted to go to Australia. I'd probably go out there and explore that beautiful continent.

Renz - Drifting in Tokyo. Japan in general is a must-go-to place.

Ryan – Play at a Passion Conference with these 4 guys

What is something that God has been trying to show and/or teach you recently?

Marquis - That people everywhere need God. Not only in Africa, or only in China, but right outside of our front doors. In the workplace, the grocery Store. People need Jesus.

Mark - He's been opening my eyes to what it means to be like Jesus. He's showing me how to love properly and withhold judgment, and how to introduce Jesus to people at their own level as opposed to expecting people change prior to meeting Him. Jesus came down so that He could make us righteous; he doesn't expect us to clean up before coming to Him. It's incredible how beautiful life can be when you let Jesus do all the work...the saving, the redeeming, and yes, even the judging.

Nathan - To have my own personality in the church. That everyone goes their own ways and there is no wrong way of loving God. We are all different.

Renz - Patience. Last year, a big one for me was "surrender". After learning how to give up what I have to praise him on a DAILY basis, it surely follows that I am to be patient to his plan. Too many times, we get hasty with our lives, and consequently we leave no room for God to do what he can in AND through us.

Ryan - Mine is really a blend of what all the guys are saying, but I would add trusting in him and knowing that His grace is all I need.

If you had to pick one bible verse to be the band's motto what would it be?

Psalm 150: 4-6. Praise him with timbre and dancing, Praise him with strings and pipes, praise him with the crash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals, let everything that has breath, praise the Lord.

Five Random Bonus Questions:

1. Have you ever broken any bones, if you have how did you break them?

Marquis – No

Mark - nose - rugby, wrist – snowboarding

Nate - Even with all the sports I've played growing up, I have yet to break a bone. I think I sprained my ankle badly when I was 14 playing street football with some friends. That's about as far as it goes for me.

Renz - I broke my toe once. I was at a surprise party and my plan was to tackle the celebrant as he was coming down the stairs. I miscalculated my attack, and bashed my foot into the staircase. I never tackled him...

Ryan – Ankle while skateboarding

2. If you could be any character from a movie, who would you be and why?

Marquis - Denzel Washington, in: EVERY MOVIE HE HAS DONE.

Mark - I used to hate batman, until I watched the Justice League cartoons. Bruce Wayne is a Scientific Ninja!

Nate - That's a tough one. I'd say Hugh Jackman in The Prestige because he has unreal magician skills.

Renz - I've always loved cartoons. Especially heroes. I know this might not count since it was a tv show before a movie, but I would love to be the Avatar, as in the water/fire/earth/air bender, not the 12 foot blue creature. I think manipulating the elements in your hands would be awesome!

Ryan - Mark stole mine, so I guess that makes me … Robin??

3. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone?

Marquis - My Boss

Mark - My Fiancee's bridesmaid

Nate - I believe it was my mother.

Renz - My mother.

Ryan - A telemarketer

4. What is your favorite ice cream topping?

Marquis - Everything and Anything Peanut buttery

Mark - Skor bits

Nate - Reese's pieces or oreo bits. Or both.

Renz - Peanut butter cups.

Ryan - Aero

5. What is something that most people don't know about you?

Marquis - When I was 5 I had a pet chicken, that I later ate without my knowledge.

Mark - I wish I had a pet chicken I could eat later

Nate - A lot of people have no idea that I'm french. I have an anglophone first and last name, I have no accent, and show no signs really of being francophone.

Renz - I'm terrified of the ocean, not because I can't swim (which most people do know), but because it's a whole different world down there. Creatures of the deep scare me.

Ryan – It takes me hours to make decisions that have no impact on my life, such as what to eat for dinner.

Faith Holt Interview

I have the pleasure of introducing you readers to a musician you probably haven't heard of, her name is Faith Holt. Below is my interview with her and you can also read my review of her new album "Move" here.

Can you give us a little background history on you got started as a musician?

I loved music early on. When I heard “Meant To Live” by Switchfoot, I wanted to play guitar. I was about 12 then. My interest was in electric, not acoustic. My parents surprised me with a guitar and that was the first song I learned how to play. Switchfoot’s album Beautiful Letdown was where it all began for sure.  I secretly wrote songs starting around age 15. I made a band Myspace, which was funny because I didn’t want anyone I knew to know I sang. I recorded really bad quality recordings with any microphone I could come up with. My youth leader found it and asked about my song “Speak Through Me” because he wanted the youth band to play it. Flash forward nearly a year later and I was 16 and over the worship for the youth group. I only played guitar. I decided to just play “Speak Through Me” one night and got several compliments about it. People were surprised because I’d kept everything a secret until then. We soon played it on a Sunday and that’s what began the road I’m currently on.

How would you describe your sound musically, and what are some of your influences?

Lately I’ve been calling it “indie pop/rock”. I feel like there are a couple songs that push the genre boundaries at times. There are definitely a few that are more “rocked out” but most of them are kind of acoustic-based rock. Switchfoot is probably my biggest influence because they’re who made me want to start playing guitar. Lyrically, Jon Foreman is my favorite writer.  Their latest album had came out shortly before we started recording Move so they definitely had some influence on the record. BarlowGirl is my other big influence. I saw them play days after their first album came out and was drawn to the fact it was a band of all girls because that’s a rare thing. The things they have stood for and talked about at shows have definitely helped me growing up. Some other notable influences are Paramore, Superchick, Krystal Meyers, Inhabited, Francesca Battestelli, Plumb, and Mat Kearney.

What is the main message that you are trying to portray with your music?

Ultimately, I want people to know they’re not alone and they don’t have to go through things by themselves. God is always there even when it seems like no one else is. Anyone can also be that voice to pass it on to someone else when it’s something they need to hear.

What is the inspiration behind your new album "Move"?

A few of the songs come from when I was in high school. The others have been written over the past three years since I graduated. We started recording early last year and “Move” was one of the two songs I wrote during the early part of this process. Probably two years ago I saw an interview with Jon Foreman where he said, “If a song’s not worth dying to sing, it’s not worth singing at all.” Since then it’s stuck with me. One day I sat down and the song started to happen very easily. For me a song that fits what he said is one that affects people. That’s what the song is about, getting out and affecting people. I knew almost instantly when I wrote it that I wanted to call the album Move because of this song. The concept deals with how we were created to live and affect people’s lives for better because that’s what God told us to do. He said to go out into the world. You don’t accomplish that by being still. You have to move. Overall, almost every song falls into that concept in some way.

If you had to pick a favorite song from your new album, what would it be?

“The Worst Part” is my favorite because of the story behind it and what I get to say at shows about it. It’s based off a conversation I had with someone when they told me they lost their best friend to suicide. They told me the worst part is “they don’t think anything’s worth living for including you.” That sentence hit me like a brick wall. I went home and wrote the song from their point of view as best as I could. Before I play it I make sure and say that no one has to go that far and they would be missed even though they may not think so. God loves them and so do other people even when they can’t see it. I will say "Hallelujah" is also worth mentioning because it's the best to play live and almost everyone who plays in my band says it's their favorite.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Not to change anything about what you believe in or what you stand for in exchange for other people’s acceptance.

If you had one day to do ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, what would you do?

My best friend went back to Sydney, Australia in December and I’m not sure when I’ll see them again. So, right now I would love to go there just to hang out with them and see whatever it is they recommend. That would probably involve a trip to KFC there because for the last year I’ve heard all about how our KFC is apparently not as cool and she wants to take me to a “real” one.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

I would say my youth leader from high school. We had the whole music thing in common. He’s who got me to start playing guitar at church and singing my own songs. He also encouraged me to record my first demo and played bass and guitar on it. More importantly though, he’s been a great friend ever since and he’s good to get advice from. He’s had ways of encouraging me to stick to what I believe no matter what.

When you aren't playing music, what do you enjoy doing?

There’s stuff like watching TV shows I keep up with and movies. One of the best things to do is have Nerf wars with some friends. It doesn’t happen nearly as much as it used to, but it’s definitely a ton of fun. Over time we collected a lot of stuff for it. Some people have thought it’s weird but it’s nothing but fun. I also love going to other concerts whenever I can.

Five Random Bonus Questions:

1. What is your favorite color?

Blue

2. What is the last movie you watched?

The last movie I watched was Babes in Toyland. That would be because I work at a daycare and they don’t care if it’s actually Christmas or not. The last movie I watched for myself though was Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

3. Do you have any allergies?

Thankfully, no.

4. What is your favorite book?

House by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. I will say I'm not much of a reader. I've only managed to read 3 books outside of school simply because I want to.

5. What is something that you collect?

I don’t really collect anything. You might say I collect concert posters if they have actual show dates and stuff on them. If I go to a show that has one, I can’t help but buy it. However, I can say when I was a kid I collected small ceramic dogs and baseball cards. That’s the only thing that made the countless trips to antique stores with my parents and grandparents bearable when I was younger.

Thanks for taking time to do this interview. Is there anything else you would like to add?

I don't have much of anything to add other than a big thank you for chatting and checking out the album!

Faith Holt - Move Album Review

On April 9th pop/rock musician Faith Holt released her first full length album titled "Move".

This album drew me in right from the beginning with the guitar on the first song "Time Bomb". This song showcases the edgier side of the album. Although this album is a rock album, it is more of a laid back acoustic type pop/rock. To be honest at first I was a little disappointed that the album wasn't a harder rock album. However after continuing to listen, I quickly changed my mind. The more I listened the more I was captivated by the albums sound and message.

Faith has a very nice voice that is in the perfect range for female vocalists, in my opinion at least. The vocals and music match up very well and it is enjoyable album to listen to. The song writing also really showcases some talent! There are a lot of great lyrics found in just this one album. My favorite line is from the song "Live", where Faith says "A lot of people effect one, but one can change many too".

"Move" has a raw and honest sound that listeners can really connect with. I feel that a good musician should not only be able to connect with the listeners through their music, but they should also be able to make the listener feel what they (the band) are feeling with the lyrics. With this album I was able to really connect with the music, and also feel what the songs were saying. That is a huge plus for me on this album.

All in all this album isn't perfect but it is really good, in my opinion. "Move" drew me in from the beginning, and then I was just a long for the ride. This album is going to continue to be on my iTunes play list for a while! I would recommend this album, and I am looking forward to hearing more from Faith Holt in the future! I would give this album 4 out of 5 stars.
